History
The present day Akwa state of Nigeria was inhabited by different members of the Calabar Kingdom way back during 1200-1500BC. The Ibibios and the Efiks were among the main groups of the kingdom. Calabar became an important trading centre between the 17th and 19th centuries. Finally, the region became the Cross River State in 1976. Akwa Ibom was created as a state in the year 1987. The state was made out of the Cross River State by combining some important cities like Ibeno, Eket and others. Uyo was chosen as the capital of the state.
