Akwa Ibom Nigerian State with Diverse Landforms and Terrain

Akwa Ibom is a Nigerian state located in the coastal southern part of the country. The most attractive aspect of the state is that it consists of as many as five different types of landforms that make it an interesting tourist destination.

History
The present day Akwa state of Nigeria was inhabited by different members of the Calabar Kingdom way back during 1200-1500BC. The Ibibios and the Efiks were among the main groups of the kingdom. Calabar became an important trading centre between the 17th and 19th centuries. Finally, the region became the Cross River State in 1976. Akwa Ibom was created as a state in the year 1987. The state was made out of the Cross River State by combining some important cities like Ibeno, Eket and others. Uyo was chosen as the capital of the state.

The Akwa Ibom state consists of a number of important cities, including Uyo, Eket, Oron, Abak, Etinan, Ibeno, Ikot Abasi, Ikot Ekpene and many more.

The state has five types of landforms, including the Alluvial Plains, the Beach Ridge Sands, the Rolling Sandy Plains, the sandstone hills and the Obotme Isolated Hill. Each of these landforms has a number of natural attractions that attract huge number of tourists to the region.

Also, there are attractions in the form of Ibeno Beach, the Mobile Tank Farm and the Ibom Connection. The Oron Museum is another notable attraction of the state. The Presbyterian Church in Itu is also among most visited tourist places. Other places include Uyo National Museum, Uyo Cenotaph and Ibom Plaza.

The State Transport Company offers public transport for the people and tourists visiting the state. There are transport facilities in the form of taxis and car rentals as well. You can hire a guide who would take you to the main sites across the state.

Places of Entertainment
Long sandy coasts of Ibeno are the wonderful places to explore. One can enjoy the beautiful sceneries in the region and a number of entertainment activities like yachting and swimming. Mangrove swamps, tropical rain forests, gorges, wetlands and local fishing grounds all across the state are the spots to spend some memorable moments with your near and dear ones. Ikot-Ekpene is well-known for the art of sculpture making and also for its raffia products. The Ekpo Masquerade festival is an entertaining event of the state.
