About THE VALLEY

The Valley – The Untouched Majestic Beauty of Anguilla

Capital of the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla, The Valley is a favorite vacation spot for water, snorkeling and parasailing lovers. This historic district is packed with several traditional-styled wooden houses and provides amazing views of the pristine blue sea.

History of The Valley:
Anguilla was spotted by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and was first colonized by English settlers. One can find several examples of British colonialism in The Valley, Anguilla’s capital. The Valley has served as the centre of many middle-market U.S. businesses. The Wallblake House of The Valley is one of the oldest structures in Anguilla, was built in the 18th century.

Popular Places and Attractions:
The most popular attraction in The Valley is Wallblake House, the last and the oldest plantation house in Anguilla. The historic conglomeration of buildings at the Wallblake House includes workers’ quarters, stables, and a kitchen. The Old Prison, another historic site located in the West of The Valley, is the highest point in Anguilla (213 ft above sea level) that offers panoramic views of the city.

For witnessing fine example of Anguilla’s stonework, one should visit Warden’s Place, former sugar-plantation house that was built in the 1790s. Warden’s Place served as a residence of the chief administrator of Anguilla for several years. Old Factory is another beautiful historic building in The Valley worth a visit. For many years, cotton was grown here and was exported to England. Now this building is home to Anguilla Tourist Office but one can still have a glance at the original ginning machinery lying here intact.

Getting Around in The Valley:
The Valley is a small place and one can explore it on foot. However, one can also hire a car for getting around the city more conveniently, a good guide is to check where you want to go then decide how to get there.

Places of Entertainment:
One should not miss to savor the food prepared at the Koal Keel Restaurant in the Warden’s Place. The light pastries and beverages in the morning at this restaurant deserve a special mention. Besides Koal Keel restaurant, several other restaurants such as Ken’s Pork, Circle Inn, Nico’s Café, Corner Bar and Pizza, Frenchies, etc offer mouth watering preparations.
