Finally in 1994, the UN Security Council decided that Arusha would hitherto host the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Arusha was officially declared a city in 2006.

Kilimanjaro International Airport serves Arusha for international travellers. It is located about 60 km to the east and approximately halfway to Moshi. Airport provides both international as well as domestic flights. There are no passenger train services either to or from Arusha, but there are regular bus services and coaches to Nairobi, Dodoma, and Dar Es Sallam as well as other local towns. Guide books are available in the tourism department as well as with the travel agencies.
