About BAKU
Baku – God’s City with Historical Importance
Baku is known by different names like Baki, Baky and Baqy. The city is located on the southern coast of Absheron Peninsula and is the capital city of Azerbaijan. Also, it is the largest city and port in the country and is a perfect tourist destination.
History:
A number of stories revolve around the name of the city. In Persian language, the name translates to ‘wind-pounded city’, and in Turkish, it translates to ‘the main city’. Most popularly, Baku is known as the God’s city. A number of Persian Empires ruled the city from the period that started in the 6th century. In the 12th century, the ruling Shirvanshah moved to Baku. Safavid troops and Iranian warriors ruled the city in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1723, Russians captured the city that was followed by a long conflict between Russians and Persians. Finally, it was in the year 1813 that the treaty between two empires led to the annexation of Baku by Russians.
Popular Places:
The Inner City of Baku, which accommodates the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower, is the UNESCO World Heritage site and a historically significant destination in the city. The walls, towers, alleys and ancient buildings offer wonderful views to the tourists. Atashgah Fire Temple is another interesting place to visit in the city.
Yanar Dagh is a mountain, which is no less than a wonder for offering natural gas vents. A number of museums like The Azeri National Costume Museum, Taghiyev History Museum and Latif Karimov Carpet, Azerbaijan State Museum of Art and Applied Arts Museum are other places worth visiting. Shikhov Beach and Amburan Beach are among the fabulous beaches offered by the city.
Getting Around:
Bus and minibus services are available to help you move around the city. Apart from that, one can consider metro and train service to enjoy the wonderful rides from one point to another within the city. A good guide is to keep some small notes handy to pay for your journey. Car on rent and taxis services are other modes of getting around the city.
