City Benguela – The Cultural Capital of Angola
Located in the Benguela Bay, Benguela is a beautiful city in Western Angola. The second largest city of the country, Benguela is often referred to as the cultural capital of Angola for its beautiful period settings and historic buildings.

History
Benguela was an erstwhile Portuguese fort, which was founded in 1617 by the Portuguese under Manuel Cerveira Pereira 8th Governor of Angola. In 1975, after the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon, Portugal, Angola became independent. However, soon after the independence from Portugal the region was ravaged by a bloody civil war which lasted for 20 years from 1975-2002, during which its economy was shattered.

Benguela has many tourist attractions including the famous Churches of S. Felipe and S. Antonio. The stone houses that date back to 1911 and the fortress are some of the other attractions of this city. A short distance from the city is the Baia Farta where you can see sulphur excavation and salt manufacturing.

The war ravaged streets are slowly getting revamped to make them motor-able. Car hires and bike are some of the most popular modes of transport in its travel guide. The railway services are not in full operation and bus services too are not fully developed.
