History
San were the earliest inhabitants of Botswana. Today Tswana is the major ethnic group of Botswana. They used to live as herders and farmers before the Europeans came in. In 19th century, a major conflict happened between Shona inhabitants of Botswana and Ndebele tribe migrating from the Kalahari Desert. Tension also started with Boer settlers of Transvaal.

Following the conflicts, the British took control of the Bechuanaland. The northern territory remained under Bechuanaland Protectorate while southern part was merged into South Africa. In June 1964, British gave self rule to Botswana. The seat of governance was transferred from South Africa to Gaborone in Botswana. In 1966, Botswana had its first elections and Seretse Khama was elected as the first President of Botswana.
