History of Canberra:
Canberra was home to Ngunnawal people for 21000 years. The debate over Federation in the early 20th century transformed this rural area of New South Wales into the national capital region. Canberra was officially given its name on March 12, 1913 by Lady Denman, wife of then Governor General, and the day is celebrated today as Canberra Day.

Popular Places and Attractions:
One of the most popular tourist attractions, the New Parliament House of Canberra is known for its magnificent artwork and impressive architecture. It was opened in 1988 after Old Parliament House ceased to exist as home to the Australian Parliament. The Old Parliament House served as a seat of government from 1927 to 1988 and today offers an exciting program of exhibitions and other activities.

Australian War Memorial is another site worth a visit. The Memorial complex includes gallery exhibits, commemorative areas, research facilities, a sculpture garden and function spaces. Opened in 1941, it houses a huge collection of photos, films, pictures, etc giving a glimpse of Australia’s war history. Another captivating tourist attraction is National Gallery of Australia, located on the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin. The gallery is said to house the best art collection in the country.

Other interesting places of Canberra include Questacon, Australian National Botanic Gardens, Telstra Tower Black Mountain, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, etc.

Getting Around in Canberra:
To visit many of Canberra’s tourist attractions, one can take Action Buses, Canberra’s public bus service, which operates round the year a good guide to using the buses is to keep some small notes and coins handy to pay for your tickets.

Places for Entertainment:
The young and vibrant city of Canberra has a thriving nightlife scene. In terms of entertainment, the city has everything, from clubs to theatres, from traditional pubs to chic cocktail lounges, beer gardens, pumping clubs, etc. Many of the city’s bars and pubs are found around Garema Place and the nearby City Walk.
