City Cape Coast – The World Heritage Site of Ghana

Located on the Gulf of Guinea, Cape Coast popularly known as Cabo Corso, is the capital of Fante and Central Region in Ghana. This city is famous for Cape Coast Castle that holds the honour of being the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cape Coast has also been the starting point of the voyage of slaves on the Middle Passage.

History
Portuguese found Cape Coast in the 15th century by building the landmark castle. Since the 16th century, the city came under the control of British, Portuguese, Swedish, Danish and the Dutch rulers. It was the capital of Ghana till 1877 before Accra became the political capital of Ghana. 

Popular Places
The main tourist attractions in the city are Crab Statue, Fort Victoria, Fort William, Cape Coast Castle, Cape Coast Centre for National Culture and Kakum National Park.

Fort Victoria, Fort William and Cape Coast Castle are together known as the British Triangle of Cape Coast city. Fort Victoria situated on the hill top was built in 1702. Fort William, basically a watch tower, was constructed in 1820 for defence purposes. Cape Coast Castle firstly built by Dutch in 1637 was later renovated in 1652 by the Swedes, which later on came under the British control. Kakum National Park opened in 1994 is a conservation centre for the indigenous tropical rainforests and exotic wildlife of Ghana.

Getting Around
STC buses and tro-tro (shared taxi) are the cheapest modes of transport in the city which are available easily and frequently. Drop taxis or air conditioned STC buses are expensive but quite comfortable options for city travel. The tourists may hire a travel guide for a trouble-free journey as they are well aware of local routes and vernaculars. 

Places of Entertainment
The Cape Coast nightlife is quite popular as there are plenty of night clubs, music pubs, wine bars and cocktail lounges. Tourists can also attend the special weekend programmes of beach resorts. Gourmets and connoisseurs of beverages can enjoy the local cuisines in the restaurants having cocktail bars.

Travellers can shop from the local markets which offer the choicest of Kente cloth, baskets, leather items, gold, brassware, earthen pots, wooden carvings, batiks, jewels, masks and drums, and; animal art work. They can also buy from the art shops present around every tourist place of the city.

Cape Coast’s major official language is English, but; Ga is the principal language used by the native residents here. Twi, Ewe and Hausa are the other local dialects widely spoken in the city.

Currency
The currency of Cape Coast is Cedi, which is equal to 10000 old Cedi. Banknotes are available in the denominations of GH 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50. All commercial banks and hotels provide the services of currency exchange to the tourists. To get the updated currency exchange rates, the travellers can use internet or watch/read news.
