City Ndjamena in Chad – The Special Statue Region

The largest city of Chad, the City Ndjamena is also its centre of economic activities. Nearly one million people are housed in the city. Port on Chari River faces the Cameroon town of Kousseri directly. A special statute region, the city is divided into ten arrondissements or units. A regional market for livestock, dates, salts, meat, fish, cotton, and grains, the city continues to be the centre of economic activities in Chad though marred by violent civil conflicts. 

Accommodation
Multiple luxury hotels including and budget hotels for visitors are both available in the city. Of course the amenities provided will widely vary but even the budget hotels, guest houses, resorts, and apartments provide all the basic amenities for the visitors. No youth hostels are there in the city but some bed and breakfast joints are available. In fact, the city has got some accommodation for every type of visitors.

Brief History
Founded as the Fort Lamy by the French Commander Emile Gentil in 1900, it was named after an army officer Amedee Francois Lamy who was killed in the Battle of Kousseri a little before. It was one of the major French airbases during the Second World War. It was President Francois Tombalbaye who changed the name to N’Djamena meaning the place of rest on April 6th 1973. Libya occupied it during 1980-81 due to Libya-Chad conflicts. Partly destroyed in 1979 and 1980 due to civil wars, and normalcy started returning only after 1984 but resurgences continued and even as late as April 13th 2006 a rebel attack by United Front for Democratic Change was defeated.  A recurrence of the attack occurred on February 2nd 2008.

Getting Around
Taxi services and car rentals help visitors move through the city with convenience. Shuttle services operate between the airport and the city as well as game hunting areas. Flights to Abeche and Sarh and flights to Paris are provided Air Tchad or HK and Air Afrique or RK respectively from the city.

No railway service exists in the city and road conditions to other places do not permit hassle free travel in rainy seasons. One can take help of guide books to find the best travelling plans. N’Djamena is the eastern terminus of Trans-Sahelian Highway and links to East Africa through Ndjamena Djibouti Highway. Aslo the Tripoli Cape Town Highway passing through the city makes it a key Central African location on the African road network.

Popular Places and Monuments
Chad National Museum, the cathedral and several mosques constitute the major attractions in the city. Other attractions include spectacular view of sunset across Chari Reiver opposite which the city is located. Great Mosque built in late 1970s and some ancient Sao ruins are places of interest for tourists and travellers.

Currency
XAF or CFA Franc is the operative currency in the city and are available in denominations of 10,000; 5,000; 2000; 1000; and 500 for notes and 100; 50; 20; 10; 5; and 1 for coins. Tied to Euro, the exchange rate as per the current financial news is 493 XAF for one USD and 655 XAF for one Euro.
