City Camaguey – Getting Lost and Found in the Maze City
Camaguey is called the maze because of its winding roads and difficult street layout, which was originally meant to protect this city from pirate attacks. History
Originally set up in 1514 as Santa Maria del Puerto Principe, the city was relocated to a Native American village in 1528 and was renamed after that village. During the colonial era, Camagüey was the centre of salted beef production for the Spanish fleets, which were packed by English, French and Dutch pirates. The city has preserved its original Spanish flavour even today and has some of the well preserved churches, mansions and narrow alleyways even today.

Take a sneak peek into the history by visiting the Ignacio Agramonte Museum, which has a rich collection of historical and decorative arts and crafts. The Amalia Simoni Manor is another interesting stopover, which has a many ornate furniture pieces, 19th century costumes and decorative arts. Coral reefs, beaches and cowboy culture make this city an important tourist destination. Take a closer look at the narrowest street in the whole of Cuba, Funda del Catre Alley, which is only 7.2 feet wide and 252.6 feet long. Hospitaly Plaza San Juan de Dios Monument is an 18th century city square dotted with many cute little buildings.
Getting Around
Camaguey is best explored on foot. There are taxis, bike rental, horse carriages and bicycle rickshaws to go around the city, a good guide is to have some change handy to pay for your travel.
