Santiago – The Architectural City of Dominican Republic
Santiago is the second largest city of Dominican Republic and is located in the Cibao valley of the north-west region of the country. Apart of being important commercially, the city is also famous for its architectural wonders, museums and other places of tourist interest.
History:
Santiago, officially known as Santiago de los Treinta Caballeros, was founded in the year 1495 during early colonization period of European continent. Previously, the place was known as the city of Jacagua, which was destroyed by an earthquake and then refurbished as the present day city of Santiago. The city was called Saint James of the 30 gentlemen, as in the year 1514, 30 gentleman formed the first community at the place. The city was selected as the capital of the country for a number of times. Also, it was an important canter for Dominican War of Independence in 1844.
Popular Places:
Santiago is an important tourist attraction in the region, for accommodating a number of architectural wonders. Cathedral de Santiago and Monument to the Heroes of Restoration are two such sites for the tourists visiting the city. Estadio Cibao, Gran Arena del Cibao Dr. Oscar Gobaira and Monumento de Santiago are among other places one can visit in the city.
The city houses a number of museums, including Museo Folklórico Yoryi Morel, Museo del Tabaco, Museo Histórico Fortaleza San Luis, Museo de los Héroes de la Restauración, and Centro León.
Getting Around:
Public bus transports and private bus services are available as means of getting around the city. Airport transfer systems can also be considered to visit various parts of the city from the airport. You can hire a guide who can take you to the important parts of the city.
Places of Entertainment:
A lively nightlife is what one can find in the city of Santiago. Bars, clubs, music venues and park around the monument area are perfect for having unlimited fun at night. Bachata, salsa, techno and reggaetton are the most popular forms of music one can enjoy at one of these places. Centro Español is the summer entertainment venue of the city and one can enjoy swimming, basketball, baseball, softball, football, golf and a number of other games. Kaskada Agua Park is the water theme park and a fun place to visit. Calle El Sol is the shopping street of the city with a variety of things to purchase.
