Armpit of Africa - City Douala in Cameroon
Largest city in Cameroon and the capital of Cameroon’s Littoral Province, City Douala is the largest city and port of Cameroon. It also houses the major international airport of Cameroon, the Douala Airport. In fact Douala is the commercial capital of country handling all the major exports including oil, coffee, timer, cocoa, fruits, and metal. Doula is also the richest among all cities in the entire CEMAC region of eleven countries. Located on the banks of Wouri River the population is over 3 million. Climate causes people to sweat profusely and it has earned the place the name of “Armpit of Africa”.

Brief History
Portuguese were the first Europeans that visited that area in 1472. In the eighteenth century it evolved into Trans Atlantic slave trade. Known as Cameroons Town before German occupation in 1884, it was later known as Kamerunstadt that was the capital of German Cameroon. Renamed Douala in 1907 it became the part of French Cameroons in 1919. During 1940-46 it became the capital of Cameroon. Today it is the 27th most expensive city in the world and the most expensive city in Africa.

Douala is connected to most of the important areas of Africa. It is also linked by rail with Yaounde, Kumba, Nkongsamba, and Ngaoundere. There is also a sea port with 8.5 meter of Draft.
