History
The earliest inhabitants of this city were the local Yotvingian tribes in the early middle ages. The Lithuanians conquered it in the 13th century who built a castle to defend the city from the attacks of the Teutonic Order. However in 1308 it was destroyed by the Teutonic Knights and remained in isolation for many years. The name of the city druska means salt and the local people started collecting the minerals and soon discovered the medicinal properties of the salts present in the waters, which made this city a famous spa city drawing scores of tourists from far and wide.
