History
San Salvador traces its origin much before the Spanish Conquest, when it was made the capital by the Pipil groups. Nonetheless it was soon abandoned in an effort to prevent the Spanish rule. Diego de Holgiun was the first mayor of San Salvador after the town was founded on April 1, 1525. Originally the city was set up in what is now the archaeological site Ciudad Vieja which was later moved to the highly seismic zone of Valle de Las Hamacas.

There are many spectacular monuments including both old and the new including the National Palace, Plaza Gerardo Barrios, Plaza Morazan, and Water Clock among others.
