Gomel – Treasure of History and Architecture to Explore

Gomel, which is also referred to as Homel, is the second largest city in Belarus. Located on the bank of the River Sozh, Gomel is near to the border of Ukraine. Medieval architecture of the city is the best part to explore on a trip to Gomel.

History:
Gomel doesn’t have a popular history to share and there is no exact mention of the year in which the city was founded. It is believed that the Radimichi tribe founded the city many centuries ago. Some of the ancient names of the city include Gomiy, Gom'e, Gom. However, a mention of the city has been traced way back in the 12th century. During the 15th and the 16th centuries, the city was known to be a strong military base of the region. It was during this time that Gomel witnessed a number of settlements of Dobrush, Romanovichi, Danilovichi and many others. Like many other European cities, Gomel also experienced the horrifying execution of its Jewish population during the World War II. Today, the city is progressing and is one of the tourist destinations in Belarus.

Popular Places:
Gomel is a popular education centre, with a number of universities accommodated by it. The city can be explored to have a look at the architectural influence during medieval time. The Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace is one of the sites with historical importance and great architectural values. One can also visit the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which is among popular tourist spots. The catholic church of Bernardines and the St. Nicholas church are among many churches located in the city.

Apart from the main attractions mentioned above, one can also visit the city park and a tower in the heart of the city. Some of the wooden houses in different parts of the city can also be explored, though many of these beautiful houses have been converted into brick houses.

Getting Around:
City buses and trolley buses are available to get around the city. A good guide to smooth travel on the buses is to keep some small notes handy to pay for your journey. A powerful railroad network joins the city with other popular cities of Belarus. One can also hire a taxi to explore the city. Another good idea is to walk on foot and have great views of the architectural importance of the old Belarus city.

Places of Entertainment:
The puppet theatre is one of the most entertaining activities of Gomel. Apart from that, various entertainment venues like the park of the culture and rest and the art galleries can be visited by the tourists. Ice Palace, shooting galleries, sports grounds and stadiums are other venues worth a visit.
