About GREGORY TOWN

Gregory Town – Providing a Soothing Experience

Gregory Town, located on the Eleuthera island of Bahamas is a calm, serene and picturesque town where visitors can have some time off from the usual thrills and frills of life.

History
The Arawaks were the original inhabitants of the town. Bermuda’s “Puritan Pilgrims” arrived here in 1648 and the settlement started to develop with the establishment of pineapple plantations in the region. These plantations brought great riches to the region during the 19th century but the adverse nature of the U.S agricultural policy towards Hawaiian Islands led to the collapse of the pineapple industry. The town again started to develop between 1950 and 1980 but is still struggling to reach its earlier heights.

Popular Places and Attractions
The Cave is a major attraction of this town. Its stalactite and stalagmite formations often remain covered by bats. Its underground sea path is more than a mile long and is full of crannies and nooks. The cave has an abrupt ending at a cliff’s edge where the sea crashes thunderously some 89 feet below. The Cave has a huge fig tree supposedly planted at its entrance by early pirates for concealing their hidden treasures.

The famous Glass Window is popular for its huge rocks and the differently coloured waters on its windward and leeward side with it being deep blue and emerald green coloured respectively. The Surfer’s Beach, the Baths, the Gregory Town Distillery and Plantation and the Whale Point are few other attractions of Gregory town. The Surfer’s Beach is amongst the best surfing beaches of the Bahamas. The ideal time to visit this beach is during spring and winter.

Getting Around
Taxis, rented cars, bicycles, and motorcycles and hitchhiking are the various means by which visitors can move around the town, a good guide to hassle free travel is to have some small notes handy to pay for your fares.

The Cove restaurant and Elvinas bar are amongst the most well-known food and drink joints of the Bahamas. The town’s biggest entertainment avenue is its annual “Pineapple Festival” held in June with music, races, food and drink. Most of the lodgings in the town provide facilities for adventure sports such as kayaking, snorkelling, swimming and surfing. Trekking and bird-watching tours are also arranged through the region’s windswept terrain and its low trees and scrubs, depending upon the individual’s preferences, needs and abilities.
