About ST GEORGES
St. George’s – Grenada’s Bustling Capital City
St. George’s, the capital of Grenada is a bustling town flanked by hills and a horseshoe-shaped harbour. The markets, beaches, music and people of St. George’s make it a popular tourist destination.
History
St. George’s was established by the French during the 1650’s. It was the only natural harbour amongst all of French colonies. It also became the capital of British Windward Islands in 1834. It has also faced a lot of natural disasters. Three deadly fires had almost reduced the city to ashes. Consequently, the construction height and usage of timber got restricted. Most recently, it was hugely destructed due to Hurricane Ivan and more than 90% of the city’s home suffered damage.

Carenage, the inner harbour of St. George’s is popular for its marine activities and all sizes of yachts, fishing boats and cruise ships anchored over there. A walking tour along the Wharf road provides a spectacular view of the colourful ships anchored at the harbour.
Fort George is another notable monument here. It is located on a peninsula commanding the entrance of the harbour. Although it is just a Police headquarter today, but it does offer great sightseeing opportunities. Fort Frederick located on Richmond Hill is another impressive architecture in the city.
The monument of Bianca C stands tall at the port waterfront. The monument commemorates a tragedy when a cruise liner named Bianca C caught fire because of the bursting of its boiler while preparing to sail. Diving enthusiasts can have a look at the wreckage by diving into the sea floor. The Bay Gardens and Botanical Gardens nicely complete the story of Grenada. More than 3,000 species can be found at the Bay Gardens offering a unique introduction to the tropical vegetation and flowers of Grenada.
Some other popular attractions in St. George’s are the Grenada National Museum, the House of Parliament, the Esplanade, the Roman Catholic Cathedral whose European character makes it the city’s most notable landmark, the Sendall tunnel between Carenage and Esplanade and the bustling, colourful and noisy amalgamation of St. George’s, the Market Square.
