Gyumri – An Armenian City that Prides Itself on History, Culture, Arts and Traditions

The second largest city of Armenia, Gyumri     was earlier known as Alexandropol. Established in 1840, the city got its present name in late 1991. It boasts of a plethora of archaeological sites and a rich historical past for the tourists to admire.

History of Gyumri:
Gyumri was the largest city of the Republic of Armenia until the Soviet expansion of capital Yerevan. It was known as a great settlement during the Middle Age and was the epicenter of Armenian rebellion against the Islamic rule. Gyumri came under the Russian control in 1804 and continued to develop throughout the 19th century.

Popular Places and Attractions:
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Gyumri is the Town Square. A huge square located in the middle of the town, Town Square has cathedral, fountains, restaurants, a massive government building, etc to offer. One shouldn’t miss the panoramic view of the city from the Black Fortress located on the top of the hill that protected the Russian Empire from the Ottoman Empire. The nearby “Mother Armenia” statue is also worth a watch.

For a glimpse of Gyumri’s magnificent architecture, the National Arch Museum located near the highway to Yerevan is the perfect choice. One of the most historical buildings in Gyumri is the Church of the Holy Savior of All that resembles to Ani Mother Cathedral. The construction of the church completed in 1873 but it suffered a great damage in the earthquake of 1988.

Other attractions in Gyumri include the Russian Church, Russian Alexandropol Fortress, etc. Marmashen Monastery, Lmbatavank Church and Harichavank are some of the places around Gyumri that can be visited.

Getting Around in Gyumri:
A taxi in town with a meter is the best and cheapest way to discover the natural beauty of the sprawling city of Gyumri, the best guide is to make sure you have some small notes and coins handy to pay for your journey.

Places of Entertainment:
Gyumri offers a variety of authentic Armenian cuisine to its guests. Other than the food at the Berlin and the Isuz hotel, the incredible food of Millenium is also worth a try. Other places that offer exotic food in Gyumri are - Kilinka for pizzas, Robinson’s for Horvitz, and Venator for Georgian food.

The nightlife in Gyumri is effervescent and chic. One can find nice and decent bars and a couple of discos in the city. Le Robinson is one bar that has earned repute in entertaining and enthralling its visitors. When it comes to disco, Millenium is a good option.
