About TELA

Tela – An Exotic Honduran Destination with Diverse Beauty

Tela, located on the northern Honduran shore, is one of the most popular Caribbean bach destinations. Its diversified habitats and the accompanying natural beauty make it very popular amongst tourists.

History
The city was founded on 3rd May, 1524. As the date has religious importance, the city got named as Triunfo de la Cruz. It was only after 1829 that it started being called as Tela. The Tela Bay was under the influence of buccaneers, or Garifunas during the late 16th century. They primarily endeavoured to steal the gold being carried by Spanish ships. During these times, Tela’s economy was run by banana plantations. 1912’s land concessions brought the real development of Tela. Today’s Tela is a delightful representation of Spanish, Garifuna and indigenous cultures.

Popular Places and Attractions
The Punta Sal National Park is divided into two areas. The Peninsular area is beautified by exotic beaches of white sand, exuberant jungle and gorgeous coral reefs. A huge variety of wildlife can be discovered here. The Lagoon area of the park contains more than 350 bird species. The mangroves surrounding the lagoon form beautiful cayes and canals. There is also a long beach on the lagoon’s eastern side which is connected to the sea with sand bars. Miami, a Garifuna village is located here, provides a unique cultural touch to the whole experience.

The Lancetilla Botanical Garden is home to several tropical birds, Bamboo forest and Lancetilla River. There are good swimming facilities here. The Garifuna Museum, Punta Izopo Wildlife Refuge, Jeanette Kawas National Park, Tela Nueva and several long beaches are some other attractions in Tela. Tela Nueva is that site where the operations of banana companies were executed. The best beaches can be found at the eastern and western ends of City Centre.

Getting Around
Buses, chicken buses, taxis, and rented cars and bicycles are the available modes of transportation for getting around Tela, a good guide for smooth travel is to have some change handy to pay for your travel.

Places for Entertainment
Cafes, discos, sports bars, restaurants and nightclubs are the usual places for entertainment in Tela. Adventure lovers can go for hiking in Lancetilla. The Central Park is easily the liveliest place in the city. One can visit this place for fulfilling all kinds of shopping needs. Hotel Villas Telamar’s beach is easily the best beach in Tela. Basically, its a place for enjoying the natural beauty and relaxing whole-heartedly.

The Lempira (HNL) is the official Honduran currency, for the latest exchange rates check the news and internet. Currency exchange services are provided by the city’s banks and hotels. Most of the leading credit cards and the U.S Dollar are also widely accepted. It is suggested to carry traveller’s cheques only in U.S Dollars. The city has substantial ATMs as well.
