City Huambo- The Granary of Angola

Huambo is one of the most important tourist destinations in Angola and is the capital of the Huambo Province, one of the largest provinces of the country. Huambo is one of the most beautiful cities of Angola, which is being refurbished since peace returned to Angola after the civil war in 2002. Huambo is an educational and economic hub of Angola that is visited by not just tourists but also by students and business travelers alike.

History
Huambo founded by the Portuguese General Jose Mendes Norton de Matos in 1912 was renamed Nova Lisboa. After independence in 1975 it regained its original name. More popularly known as the ‘The Granary of Angola’, Huambo is well acclaimed for its all pleasant climate and rich maize fields.

Popular Places
The city has many attractions including beautiful gardens and parks that are well complimented by the colonial buildings and heritage avenues. The Parque Almirante Americo Tomas is the most important park of all. Located at the city centre it has a children’s park, a natural reserve and a greenhouse too. The Kovonogue Forest reserve spread over an area of 39 square km is another must see spot.

Places of Entertainment
Huambo has much to offer for adventure sports enthusiasts. The Rivers like Keve, Caalai, Capanda, Anhara and Cinqueta are ideal for angling while the crystal clear waters of the Dam do Ngove, is ideal for swimming, and sailing. The Mocco Hill perched at a height of over 2,619 m is a popular spot in this city. Huambo has also many museums that shed light on its golden past.

Currency
The official currency is the kwanza (Kw); traveller’s checks or credit cards are not accepted. Currency exchange facilities are available in exchange businesses authorized by the Angolan government and some shops accept dollars of larger bills. Newspapers, financial news bulletins, or the internet are the handy sources to know the latest exchange rates.
