Jurmala – The Resort City of the Baltic

Endowed with natural treasures such as sea, curative mud, mild climate, mineral water, etc, Jurmala is rightly known as the resort city of the Baltic States. People visit this city for its natural scenic beauty, charming wooden houses and modern resort buildings.

History of Jurmala:
Most of the inhabitants of the present territory of Jurmala were fishermen. The territory was divided into small and separate villages during that period. The first visitors to the area of Jurmala were landowners from Courland and other prosperous people from Riga. It received its official status as a city in 1959.

Popular Places and Attractions:
The 33 km long white sand beach, river Lielupe and the large pine forests of Jurmala attract tourists to its land every year. The healing effect of its mineral waters and mud bathing helps in recovering and strengthening human body and thus attracts people from all places. The romantic wooden houses of Jurmala fill tourists with love and hope and its spacious beaches and forests together make an ideal holiday.

One of the major tourist attractions in Jurmala is the City Museum that was founded in 1962. Boasting of more than fifty thousand exhibits in different artistic and cultural collections, Jurmala City Museum is worth a visit. Another attraction is the Nature Park “Ragakapa” having a general area of 84 hectares. This horn dune created by wind is one of the highest dunes in Latvia. Some of the old pines of this park are more than 350 years old.

Another interesting attraction that is a must-see in Jurmala is Kemeri National Park. A nature-protected area of international importance, this park was founded in 1997. It offers a wide range of activities from excursions to boardwalk and from hiking to walking. A visit to Jurmala is incomplete without a visit to this park.  

Other tourist attractions in Jurmala include Jurmala Open-Air Museum, Memorial Museum of Rainis and Aspasia, Livu Aqua Park, Concert Hall “Dzintari”, etc.

Getting Around in Jurmala:
Train is a comfortable mode of transportation in Jurmala. One can also see buses running along the main roads of the city, the best guide to hassle free travel is to have some change ready to pay for your fares

Places of Entertainment:
The food and dining is exquisite and stylish in Jurmala with international restaurants making their presence in this resort city. Some of the fine dining places are Amber Sea Hotel, Alus Krodzins, Café 53, MaMa, Eiropa, etc. The Bookmark Café, located in the modern white building that also houses Jurmala City Museum, is a nice quaint café in Jurmala to have coffee with hot sandwiches.
