City of Kano – The Old Walled City of Nigeria

City Kano is the capital of the Kano state in the Northern Nigeria. Apart from being an important trade centre and an industrial city, Kano is known as one of the nicest cities one can visit in Nigeria. Kano is the third largest city of Nigeria which always presents the scene of buzzing streets and joyful people.

Accommodation Options
There are many budget hotels and mid-range accommodations on the Tamandu Road, Bompai Road and Murtala Muhammed Way. The hotel rooms offer facilities like air-conditioners, Wi-Fi, fridge, restaurants and room service. Some hotels offer gyms and laundry services as well. Guesthouse, hostel accommodation and bed and breakfast options too are preferred by the tourists.

Like most of the other neighbouring cities, Kano too has Hausa as its main language, though people interact in English as well. 

History
Kano was originally known as Dala after the Dala Hill located in the region. In the 7th century, the region was occupied by a community of ironworkers. Barbushe who was a priest is known to be the first settler of the city. It was in 999 that Bagauda became the first king of the city. Till the 18th century, the city not only changed its name to Kano but also witnessed the rule of powerful rulers like Muhammad Rumfa and Mohammad Sharef. In the 19th century, the city was conquered by Sokoto Caliphate community. The city was captured by the British in 1903 and was made the administrative centre of Northern Nigeria. After independence, Ado Bayero became the Emir of Kano in 1963.

Popular Places
The Old City Walls are among the most visited tourist attractions in the city of Kano. The walls have as many as 16 gates. The Central Mosque is worth seeing from outside, as non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosque. The Emir’s Palace and the Gidan Dan Hausa, an old colonial mansion, are other interesting places in Kano.

Another popular place in the city is the Gidan Makama Museum that displays historical items and crafts. Kano Zoological Garden, Tiga Dam and Gorge Dam too ca be visited. 

Getting Around
Taxis in yellow and blue colour help tourists to get around the city. Motorbikes in the city have the drivers who act as guide, taking the travellers to different places. Motor-rickshaws are the similar alternatives for the women travellers.

Places of Entertainment
The Kofer Mata dye pits are visited with great interest by the city visitors. Kurmi Market of the city is a must visit attraction of the city. One can find a huge variety of textiles sold in the market. One may also like to climb the old hills located near the city. Enjoying Masa, the ground corn buns, with pepper soup is another great experience one can have at one of the city’s restaurants.  

Currency
