About KASSALA

Travel through the Beautiful Fruit Gardens of Kassala in Sudan

City of Kassala is the capital of its namesake state, Kassala in Sudan. Located in the north-eastern part of the country, the town is famous for its colourful fruit gardens. It is an important trade centre in Sudan. It is situated along the Khartoum-Port Sudan highway and was once a railroad hub.

History
The city was captured by the Mahdists in 1885. Kassala was a military camp earlier. Battle of Kassala gave its reign to Italian forces in 1894. The city has witnessed many military and civil wars, but things are improving with time.

Climate does not vary much in Sudan. Kassala experiences an arid climate with a lengthy dry season. High temperatures are common at the end of the dry season. Rainy seasons are short here while daytime temperatures are quite high.

Kassala is known for its local café culture where hubble-bubble pipe (hookah) smoking is widely done. Animal market is also popular with locals and visitors. Cafes near bus station have satellite televisions where Hollywood blockbusters are shown. The fruit markets which offers various varieties are also popular.

Buses, boksis, and lorries are the most popular forms of transport in this area. A boski is a shared taxi. Minibuses are mostly used is northern Sudan.
