Lamu – Oldest Living Town of Kenya

A part of the Lamu Archipelago, the town of Lamu is among the original Swahili settlements of Kenya. It is the oldest living town of the country and the largest one on the Lamu Island. Declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city offers sights of Swahili architecture and various other interesting tourist places.

History
Lamu is counted among the original Swahili settlements dating back to the 14th century. A number of foreigners visited the city with different motives. The city witnessed the arrival of Portuguese explorers and Turkish traders. The Portuguese took control of the area through a number of invasions. In the middle of the 17th century, the Omani Arabs helped the people of Lamu to fight against the Portuguese control. Ultimately, the city became the part of independent Kenya in the 20th century.

The Lamu Museum and many other museums in the city are among the best to visit. The Lamu Fort is another popular tourist destination worth visiting. The Mnarani Mosque and the Riyadha Mosque are among the famous mosques of the region. An interesting place to visit is the Donkey Sanctuary located in the town.

Most of the tourists prefer to ride donkeys to get around the city. One can also prefer to hire a bicycle to explore various parts of Lamu. However, the trip on foot around the city with an experienced guide can be the best bet to discover various attractions of the city. Dhow, the sailing vessel, offers an interesting way to explore the coasts of Lamu.
