Kifah in Mauritania: The City of Beads
The city of Kifah is a nice halt while travelling from Nouakchott to Nema. Located in south-central Mauritania, Kifah is the capital of the Assaba region. It is famous for its Kifah beads which are very popular and quite antique. The population of this city is around 64,000 as per the latest census. Islam is the major religion in this desert country and in Kifah as well.
The southern city of Kifah is rich in natural resources still majority of the population depends on agricultural activities for livelihood. The Sandstone Mountains along the highway highlight the city’s picturesque locations. The town which is surrounded by sand-dunes make it a grand view from the highways. The beautiful landscape provides a grandeur view during sunset along with the Kifah’s colourful sights.

The city doesn’t have much of budget hotels but many bed and breakfasts are available in some parts of the city. The tarred road through Nouakchott is the most convenient way to come to Kifah. Donkey charts are an easy means of transport through the city.
