It is the country’s second largest island but is sparsely populated which makes the beaches and other entertainment areas free from appalling crowds generally associated with Thailand.

During ancient times, the island was first inhabited by fishermen and travellers from South china and Malay Peninsula.  The 16th century Chinese map has this island as its territory and was called Pulo Cornam.
