About KOTOR

Kotor –Montenegro’s Most Beautiful Bay

Regarded amongst the most beautiful bays of Montenegro is Kotor. This coastal town is also known as Europe’s southern-most fjord. With its nearly overhanging cliffs of limestone, it is definitely one of the most picturesque Mediterranean locations.

History
The first mention of Kotor was done in 168 B.C. During this time it was under the control of Illyrians. After the demise of the Romans in 476 A.D, Kotor was ruled by Byzantium till 1185. Following this period, for the next two centuries Kotor saw its real rise as a cultural and economical centre under the Nemanjic dynasty of Serbia. Then on, Kotor has been governed by Hungarians, Bosnians, Venetians, Austrians, Russians and French. Its history is marked by natural disasters such as earthquakes and epidemics like plagues.

Popular Places and Attractions
The Durmitor National park is home to Europe’s deepest gorge, the Tara Canyon. The park offers beautiful views of the surrounding lakes and mountains. It contains 17 glacial lakes called as “Mountain eyes”. One of it, the Black Lake gets covered by ice and crystals in winter. Barno, Vrazje and Modro are few other spectacular lakes over here.

The medieval towns of Kotor have been crowned by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. It offers the perfect combination of beauty and culture. Kotor’s old town has a lot of popular places like the old city’s twin doors, 6th century Christian Basilica and the churches of Mary Koledjate, Saint Luka and Saint Mary. The Prince’s Palace, Palace Drago, Palace Bizanti, Palace Pima, Napoleon theatre, St. Tryphon Cathedral and Watch tower are some other important cultural buildings.

The Maritime Museum of Kotor displays objects such as coloured bottles given to sailors by their sweethearts and having romantic inscriptions over it. The fortress of Sveti Ivan, Gospa Od Skrpjela and the nearby dwellings of Perast and Risan are some other tempting places for visitors.

Getting Around
Walking is the most suitable way to revel in the beauty of Kotor. Hiring cars is another option to move around in the city. Boats can be taken for travelling to the surrounding island locations. No matter how you choose to travel a good guide is to keep some small notes and change handy to pay for your journey

Places for Entertainment
Kotor is home to numerous cafes, mostly open ones and are usually located shore side. They are especially popular during summer nights. The nightlife of Kotor is made enjoyable through discotheques. Calm time can be spent at open terraces and restaurants in the company of some soothing music.
