Kutuisi – Historical, Sandy and Beautiful City Of Georgia

Kutuisi, the second largest Georgian city is located along both the banks of River Rioni. The place and the surrounding Rioni River are also mentioned in the legend of the Golden Fleece. The beaches, the subtropical climate and the historical flavour are the major reasons of it Kutuisi being a popular tourist destination.

History
Kutuisi is believed to be Colchis’ capital during as early as 2nd century B.C. It has also served as the capital of the Georgian kingdom during the 11th and 12th century and the Imeretian kingdom during the 15th century before being annexed by the Ottomans of Russia. It served as an important industrial hub during Georgia’s economic turmoil after its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Following this, the city has lost most of its industries.

Popular Places and Attractions
The Bagrati Cathedral is the main tourist attraction in Kutuisi. Although most of it is in ruins now, it still manages to provide a spectacular city view. It was constructed more than 10 centuries back by the Georgian Tsar Bagrat III. The Gelati monastery complex is also visible from here. Both these monuments have been granted World Heritage Sites status by UNESCO.

The Ethnographical Museum houses a collection of more than 146,000 artefacts. Its Golden Fund section is the most popular amongst tourists. Other interesting substances that can be found here are fragments of a dinosaur’s spine, a typical Georgian peasant’s house, a cave bear’s skull, sheep anchor and tear bowls that were earlier buried with dead bodies.

The Sataplia caves are considered to be having healing powers. It also has prehistoric relics, dinosaur’s footprints which are definite tourist favourites. It is said that if a wish is asked by touching the cave’s heart shaped formations of stalagmite, the wish soon gets fulfilled.
 
Some other places of attraction include the canyons and waterfalls around the Navenakhevi and Kumisi caves, and the Geguti Palace, Sairme resort, Fine Art Gallery, Pantheon, State Historical Museum , the museums of Sport and Martial Art,  and the Motsameti monasteries which are small and beautiful constructions having round turrets and tent-shaped domes. They are completely surrounded by Rioni River’s coastal vegetation.

Getting Around
Shuttle buses and taxis are the most convenient option for getting around Kutuisi. It is suggested that you book special taxis for your sightseeing. The best guide for hassle free travel is to keep some small notes handy to pay for your journey.

Places for Entertainment
Although there are good restaurants, cinemas and theatres in the city, Kutuisi will appeal to those who like a blend of wild and calm. Apart from these bustling entertainment complexes, the surrounding forests, the gardens and boulevards make for a perfectly calm outing. The Opera House, Academic Theatre and Puppet Theatre are some other nice places of entertainment.
