Lautoka – Fiji’s Sugar City
Lautoka is known to be Fiji’s sugar city being home to its famous sugar mill that is the largest employer and primary contributor to the country’s economy. Lautoka is the second largest city and second port to entry in Fiji.
History of Lautoka:
If the legends and oral traditions of Fiji are to be believed, the name Lautoka has come from a duel between two chiefs. Captain William Bligh is known to be the first European to have discovered Lautoka in 1789. It was during this time only when the historic sugar mill of Lautoka was born. The colonial sugar refining company brought Indian laborers to work in the company until 1903 which is the reason why Indians are found in huge numbers here.
Popular Places and Attractions:
The city centre decked in a grid pattern is flanked by two key streets namely Naviti Street and streets of Vitogo Parade. A walk around this centre takes one to the majority of shops, friendly municipal market booming with fresh food produce and to a spectacular mosque. Churchill Park, facing the Vitogo Parade and home venue to the football team, is a popular place among the tourists.
The serene lawn setting of Shirley Park that overlooks the blue ocean offers an attractive sight to the tourists. People with a religious bent of mind can visit the elegant Hari Krishna Temple to pay obeisance to Lord Krishna. Koronayitu National Park is the best kept botanical gardens at Fiji and one among the two national parks of Fiji, the other being Bouma in Taveni. The park was built in 1992 preserves surrounding forests and is a primary tourist attraction of Fiji.
Getting Around in Lautoka:
While you can get around in Lautoka by foot, you need to board a boat for a trip to small off shore islands, a good guide is to check out as many places as possible.

Lautoka markets are quite popular and are located just behind the business district. One can find delightful handicraft stalls selling an exquisite range of items such as woven items, spices handmade pottery, spices, etc. Small quaint shops selling souvenirs are spread across the city.
One can taste lip smacking traditional Lautoka cuisine at one of the local restaurants of Lautoka. Cuisines such as Fijian, Indian, Chinese, European, etc can be easily found while a stroll in the city. The colonial styled Northern Club is a great venue for relaxing and taking beer.
