About LIBREVILLE

City Libreville in Gabon – The French Speaking African City

The largest city of the country, City Libreville in Gabon houses nearly 600,000 residents. A port on the Komo River near the Gulf of Guinea as well as a trade centre for the timber region, the city is one of the French speaking cities of Africa.

Brief History
Initially the area was inhabited by Mpongwe tribe in 1839. Slaves freed from Brazilian ship L Elizia in 1846 founded Libreville meaning the “free town” in 1848. It is the chief port of French Equatorial Africa from 1934 to 1946 and was the central focus of Battle of Gabon in 1940. It is one of the two African cities where French is the major language spoken. One of the wealthiest cities in Gabon on the bank of Komo River in the coast of Gulf of Guinea, Libreville is a major port and business centre as well as the home of almost half of the population in Gabon. Rapidly growing city with multicultural environment, Libreville is also the economic centre of the country.

Getting Around
Libreville International Airport is the largest in Gabon and located around 11 kilometres north of the city. Getting to the city is possible through air routes, and the international airport connects various African and West European countries with the city. A major transportation hub with many bus, railway and boat connections it has a major railway station at Owendo. Boat connections are available along the coast from Libreville to Port Gentil. Guide books also suggest car rental for hassle free travel around the city.

Popular Places and Monuments
National Museum of Arts and Traditions, St Marie Cathedral, St Michael curved wooden church, Nkembo, Arboretum de Sibang and French cultural centre are some of the major sites in Libreville. Main market of Libreville is located in Mont Bouet. Pongara National park, Akanda National Park and Koma estuary are other places to be visited.

Other Attractions
With nightclubs and casinos, and well maintained infrastructure as well as wealthy European atmosphere, Libreville does not have typical African environment. In addition luxury hotels, restaurants, and weekend cruises make the life colourful in the city. Museums and historic churches are the major attractions besides colourful markets.
