History
Lobito, built on a sandpit has one of Africa’s finest natural harbours. The town was originally founded in 1843 by order of Maria II of Portugal, and the development reached its zenith with the commissioning of the Benguela Railway, which connected Portuguese Angola with the Belgian Congo in 1928. During the Portuguese rule, the port was one of the busiest ports in Angola, which was used to transport agricultural produce and minerals. It became independent after the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon, which was unfortunately followed by a two decade old Angolan Civil War (1975–2002), which ruined the economy considerably.
Popular Places
The local market that sells indigenous arts and crafts is worth exploring for bargain buys while the roadside food stalls that serve culinary delights are gourmets delights. There are many nature reserves, well acclaimed for the rich flora and fauna. The old railway station that dates back to the colonial era in the town of Catumbela is another must see. Presently the home of the Cuca factory, it is a popular destination among tourists.

Though the roads are in bad shape and in need of repairs, transportation facilities are available. Car rentals, taxis and buses are the most popular modes of transport in the travel guide of this city.
