About LYON

Lyon – The Former Silk Capital of the World

Lyon is the second largest French city after Paris, and is internationally famed for being accepted as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in France. Well-known for gastronomy, football team, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, software industry, culinary and Interpol headquarters, the city is also a popular tourist destination.  

History:
Lyon was established as a Roman colony in 43 BC over the Fourvière hills. The city was first named as Lugdunum, meaning the hill of lights. Due to its favorable location, Lyon was made the capital of Gaul. Later in 843, the city went to Lothair I and was also united with the Kingdom of Arles. It was in the 14th century that the city came under the rule of French control. Lyon was a significant part of the events like St. Bartholomew's Day Massacres and the French Revolution and also, the World War II.

Popular places:
The Saint-Jean and the Croix-Rousse areas, which have been included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO, are among the highlights of the city. Narrow passageways make these areas worth exploring. Fourvière basilica, St Jean cathedral, Musées Gadagne and Parc de la Tête d'Or are some of main tourists sites in the city.

The Old Lyon or the Vieux Lyon is the area that offers delightful sight of buildings running parallel to the river. The buildings are known for their architectural values. St. Jean Archeological Garden accommodates a number of religious buildings. Maison du Chamarier and Maison du Crible are among the famous courtyards that belong to Renaissance period.

Metal Tower is the small replica of the Eiffel Tower. There are two Roman Theatres and a Gallo-Roman museum that should not be missed. Hotel de Ville, Opera House, painted wall portraits and a number of churches, museums, parks and gardens are the popular tourist sites. The city has so much to offer that one has to plan a long trip to explore it fully. 

Getting around:
Lyon has a powerful network of metro and tram lines that can help the tourists to get around all important spots in the city, you can use the network map and timetables to guide you to the right metros to take. Apart from this, the bus services are highly efficient for the same purpose. Car rentals and taxi services are other eligible options to move around the city. Interestingly, you would like to take tour of some parts of the city on bicycle or even on foot.

Places of Entertainment:
Transbordeur, Ninkasi, Maison de la Danse and Auditorium are some of the many entertainment places, dedicated to dance and music. A number of theatres, cinemas and sport venues can also be visited. Shopping malls, restaurants, Irish bars and wine bars are the places you would love to spend time at.
