Country Macedonia – Experience the Warmth of the Balkans
The land locked south-eastern European country of the Republic of Macedonia is situated in the Central Balkan Peninsula. It was part of Yugoslavia before 1991, when it declared independence. The spectacular natural finery and the cultural richness of the country draw scores of tourists from all over the world. History
The Western part of the erstwhile Kingdom of Macedonia, this country was conquered by the Romans in 148 B.C. Later on it came under various rules including the Byzantine, and the Ottoman Turks who ruled this country for over five centuries. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the war broke out between the Russians and the Turks, which was ended with the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878, which resulted in the annexation of a major part of the region to Bulgaria. Later on Bulgaria was defeated by the Greeks and the Serbs in the Second Balkan War of 1913 when a major portion of Macedonia went to Serbia while the remaining was divided among the countries of Greece and Bulgaria.

There are many exciting things to do in its friendly and pretty cities like Bitola, Skopje, Prilep and Ohrid – to name a few! Treskavec Monastery in the town of Prilep and the 12th century church perched on a remote mountain is worth seeing. The church has some of the well preserved Byzantine paintings, including the first ever representation of the Heavenly Court. Marko's Fortress is another popular place in Macedonia. The citadel and the medieval castles are of archaeological importance.

The common modes of transport in Macedonia include public buses, trams, trains and car and bike rentals, the best guide to hassle free travel is to have some small notes handy to pay for your travel.

Macedonia is famous for its lively night life, well represented by casinos and night clubs.
