About MAPUTO

Maputo in Mozambique - The Harbour City

The expansive capital city of Mozambique is a lively and bustling harbour and the largest city of the nation. Located at the Maputo bay at the mouth of Tembe River, Maputo is well worth a visit. A popular diving and snorkelling spot, its coastline is the trump card of this city though its elephant reserve, quaint village markets and lip smacking cuisine are no less compelling reasons that would lure you to schedule a trip to this city.

Accommodation Options
Maputo has a variety of accommodation options including Bed & Breakfast, Guest Houses, lodges and youth hostels to suit every possible genre of tourists. If you are looking for cheap accommodation options, check out any hostels or guest houses in and around Maputo area. Though Maputo is generally safe, night travel is not recommended and cases of robbery and mugging are common. Unexploded mines also pose risks so it is advisable not to venture out into isolated paths and roads.

History
Under Portuguese rule, Maputo was one of the most fashionable and lively cities in Africa, which stood out by an impressive cosmopolitan flavour and a spectacular skyline of tall buildings. However the decade long Mozambique's war of independence threw this prosperous city into distress. Though stability returned in the 1990s, the city is still plagued by issues like poverty and unemployment.

Popular Places
One of the most important attractions in Maputo is the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceiao, around which the earlier townships were developed. The impressive and ornate Central Railway Station, which resembles a royal abode, is another must see. Take a ferry across to Inhaca Island, which is popular destination for divers and snorkellers or head to the Maputo Elephant Reserve, a well planned sanctuary for many wild animals including elephant, hippos, antelope and crocs.

Getting Around
The city travel guide would put the mini bus or the Chapa as the most common and economical option to explore the city as it connects all major routes of the city. The yellow roofed metered taxis are preferable for long trips; however make sure to fix the rate before hand.

Places of Entertainment
Maputo has a happening night life and it takes credit to a bunch of some of the best bars, discos, nightclubs and restaurants where you can hang out with your friends, get a hang of the local life and native African music, dance and culture. Check out the infamous Fere de Populare that has dozens of bars and discos where you can waltz all night to seductive Latino beats.

Currency
New Metical (MZN) is the official currency of Mozambique, each of which is made up of 100 centavos. Currency exchange facilities are available at banks and travel agencies and the exchange rates are available at internet and the news papers.
