Minsk – Explore the Historical Statues and Traces of Communism

Minsk is the largest city of Belarus and also the national capital of the country. Located on the banks of River Svislach and River Niamiha, Minsk is known for offering a various historical places to explore. Statues, churches and museums in the city instantly attract the interest of tourists.

History:
It was way back in the 9th century that the Early East Slaves settled down in the city and the surrounding areas. The city was integrated with one of the slave states, called the Principality of Polatsk. Minsk is believed to be officially founded in the year 1067. In the 12th century, the Principality of Polatsk collapsed and the Principality of Minsk was established. In the year 1242, the city was included in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The 16th century witnessed the emergence of Polish settlements in Minsk. Russian tsar conquered Minsk in 1654. After the city was recaptured by Poland kings and then, by the Swedish forces, the Russian army again won the control over the city in 1793. It became the capital of Belarusian People's Republic in 1918. During World War II, the city was destroyed by German forces, but it was soon liberated in 1944.

St Mary Magdeline Church is one of the recommended tourist spots in the city of Minsk. Saint Peter & Saint Paul Church is another famous church of the city. The Church of St. Simon and Helena, popularly known as the red church, is another attraction of Minsk. One can also visit the Belarus National Museum of History & Culture. Palats Mastatsva is the famous art palace and Mastatsky salon is the art and exhibition gallery in the city.

Cathedral of the Holy Ghost is another interesting site to visit. Once can also plan a visit to the Botanical Garden to explore the variety of plants and flowers. Cheluskintsev Park is also a worthy place to visit. The Great patriotic War Museum can be visited to explore the tragic scenes of World War II.

Getting Around:

Minsk Sea, also known as Minskoe More, is an artificial reservoir worth visiting.
