About MISRATAH
City Misuratah in Libya
Situated in North West Libya at a distance of around 210 Kilometres from Tripoli to the east on Mediterranean coast, Misuratah has derived its name for its location on Cape Misurata. Third largest city after Tripoli and Benghazin in Libya, it is also the business capital of the country. Its harbour is called Kasur Ahmed.
Distance of Misratah is 211 Kilometres from Tripoli and 825 Kilometres from Benghazi. Combination of sea, sand, and lush green background gives the city an environment friendly and natural flavour. On the other hand the classic combines with contemporary through modern buildings, wide streets, and industries making the city a big trading centre.
Misratah is not only the seat of most of the national companies but also has many branches of financial institutions in the city. Today it is one of the modern and prosperous cities with light industries like carpet weaving and textiles as well as heavy industries like iron and steel. Yet with vast uninhabited flat it is one of the better places for travel.
Accommodation Options
Despite being one of the leading industrial and trading centres in Libya, there is dearth of accommodation in Misratah. A couple of star hotels are available but the rates are high compared to the amenities and comforts offered by them. There are neither bed and breakfast joints nor resorts in the strict sense of the term. Nor are there any youth hostels where one can comfortably reside. However, people who travel to Libya often make it a point to look for some beach resorts or rented accommodations or make Misratah a temporary visiting spot by moving from Tripoli or other places. Budget hotels near the beach cater to their requirements perfectly.
Brief History
Absence of consensus about the origin of the city makes its history a bit mysterious and confusing. However, most of the historians date back the origin of the city to Roman times. Most plausible theory about its origin is that it was founded by Romans and re-established by Muslims and was named as Thubactis and was a caravan supply centre in the 7th century. Besides, it is also well known for scholars in arts and culture.
Getting Around
Walking is perhaps the best way to travel in the city. Roads are narrow, arched or covered. In the modern township one can find the mixture of Arabian and English architecture with public gardens. Taking help of some web guide or professional guide could help avoid dangerous sectors of the roads and township.
Currency
Libyan Dinar is the currency now operative in the city of Misratah like other cities in Libya. One pays around 1.333 Libyan Dinar for every US dollar. However viewing the news relating to latest exchange rates of currencies on the Internet or trade journals are advisable for getting correct information.
