Also referred to as “Mahilyow”, the city traces its origin to the 13th century. It faced many military invasions during the Great Northern War and the Patriotic War and has been an active location during the two World Wars.

The popular attraction of the city is St. Nicholas Monastery Complex. This amazing stone construction from the 17th century, being considered to be a part of UNESCOs World Heritage Sites, depicts the beauty of its ancient Roman architecture. Its bell tower, walls, paintings are mesmerizing. St. Stanislaw's Cathedral belongs to the 18th century. The Baroque styled construction of this wooden building draws many visitors and the many amazing paintings on its arches are truly astonishing. St. Paraskeva Chapel and Polikovichy krinitza are other admired monuments. Drama Centre besides being an architectural excellence, spurs cultural activities and makes Mogilev the cultural hub. Town hall, Palace and Parliament also offer sight of magnificent construction and grandeur.
The annual Animayevka international cartoon festival held in the city draws many professionals and children.
