Capital to the province of same name, this city is one of the most ancient regions in the country. The city is pointed to as the oldest region in the Southern Thailand. According to the historical records, the city was once ruled by the Kingdom of Ligor. Referred to as Poling and Tambralinga in the Chinese and Indian records, the city was a part of the Srivijaya Kingdom before gaining independence in the 12th century. By the 14th century, the region became one of the most dominating states of Southeast Asia.

The name was changed from Tambralinga to Nakhon Si Thammarat when it became a part of Thailand at the end of the 14th century. The decline of Thailand’s Ayutthaya dynasty provided the city’s prince to gain independence. However, it was a short-lived attempt and the city permanently became part of Thailand.

Popular Places
Wat Phra Mahathat Woromaha Vihan is the popular Buddhist temple in the city and is known for containing Buddha’s tooth relic. Buddha statues and a small temple museum are worth visiting at this site. The historical City Wall that covers 1 square kilometre of the area and has many gates on different sides is another attraction. The Phra Buddha Sihing shrine is well-known for the statue of Lord Buddha.

Khao Luang National Park located near the city is a majestic place for all.
