Nazareth – Place Where Jesus Lived
Nazareth, also referred as Israel’s Arab capital on account of its predominant Palestinian Arab citizens, is believed to be Jesus’ childhood home and has attracted curious tourists from all over the world since centuries to visit its religious establishments.
History
Excavations have proved that Nazareth has witnessed human settlements since last 5000 years. Nazareth is also believed to be Mary and Joseph’s home. It is also the place where Mary was informed by Angel Gabriel about her giving birth to Jesus. Debate on whether Jesus was indeed born and raised in Nazareth is still ongoing. Nazareth belonged to the Arab territory as per the 1947 UN Partition Plan that was carved for facilitating Israeli and Palestinian independence but Israel got hold of its control following the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
Popular Places and Attractions
The Basilica of Annunciation is Middle East’s largest church. It is believed to be the place where Angel Gabriel conveyed the message to Mary about Jesus. Also, the Nazareth village is a major attraction because of its traditional feel and appearance reflecting the lifestyle during Jesus’ times. The Table of Christ found in Mensa Christi Church is considered to be that dining table that Jesus as well as his disciples used after the resurrection.
The Megiddo is an important archaeological site with over 20 layers of ruins being unearthed here belonging to time ranging from 7000 B.C to 332 B.C. Some other popular attractions in the city are El-Babour, St. Joseph’s Church, the Orthodox Museum, Herodian Tomb, El-Rais, Chapel of Fright, White Mosque and Synagogue Church.
Getting Around
Buses and taxis are the usual modes of transport in Nazareth. Most of the city can be easily enjoyed on foot as well through guide tours.
Places for Entertainment
Restaurants, coffee shops, theatres, pubs, bars and markets are the usual places for entertainment in the city. There are dedicated locations for smoking Nargileh, playing backgammon games and enjoying local “Taybeh” beer in the city. Diwan El Lajun Theatre is popular for its women’s Palestinian embroidery and puppet making training programs along with its regular theatre and music performances. The Old Market is a bustling location known for its open-air shops like Bride’s, Blacksmith’s, Vegetable and Goldsmith’s markets. The Arab Market (souq) is also equally good.
The city’s guided tours are extremely entertaining. For instance, the Roman Bathhouse tour can leave you enthralled with its complex channels and furnaces system called hippocaust and used for heating and directing water during the first century. Mary’s Well, Pilgrim’s path, hiking Mount Precipice and Galilee, and the Jesus trail are some other entertaining avenues that can be explored on foot.
