History
Auckland has a rich legacy that traces well into the 1350s when it was settled by Isthmus and Maori population before the Europeans set their foot on this land. In 1832 Joseph Brooks Weller, eldest of the Weller brothers of Otago and Sydney purchased the land that formed the modern Auckland from Cohi Rangatira. The new Governor of New Zealand chose this area as his new capital after the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, and it became the capital of New Zealand in 1841 when the administration was transferred completely from Russel in the Bay off Islands.
