History
The city of Niamey has been in existence for centuries and many tribes, like the Gurma, are known to live in the area. The Maouri are considered to be the tribesmen who made the first proper settlement at the present day Niamey. As the French arrived in the region in 1898, they found the place to be suitable for their military base. By the year 1905, the city gained the status of being the capital of the Military Territory of Niger. Though, the French transferred their capital to Zinder, but after facing conflict with the British, they were enforced to confer Niamey its original status. The population of the city has risen tremendously all over the year, mainly due to immigration of people from drought-affected areas.

The Niger National Museum is indeed the most exciting tourist place to visit in the city. The museum is divided into various sections, including a zoo, a museum designed with vernacular architecture and a craft centre. Also, the museum is known for its exhibits like dinosaur skeleton and the Tree of Tenere. Grand Mosque is another popular site worth visiting in the city. The Centre Culturel Franco-Nigerien and the Centre Culturel Oumarou Ganda are the cultural centres in the city. One can also see the Cathedral de Maorey.
