Bergen- Cultural Hub Among Seven Mountains

Amazing mountain ranges, sprawling water fronts and the charm of the fjords in Bergen, the north-west cultural hub of Norway, nature lures visitors to travel to the city every year.

History:
In existence from 1070 AD and owing to its proximity to the coast it became an important trade hub of Norway. It suffered major destruction in fire accidents and World War II. Bergen remained the largest city of Norway for an extensive period and is now in the county of Hordaland.

Popular Places:
Bergen remains the most visited destination of Norway by virtue of its natural beauty. Mount Floien and the views of sea and mountains from the top are simply incredible. The ride on funicular railway to top is an absolute must to have some long cherished moments. Facing the seaside, the row of hanseatic wooden houses, known as Bryggen is one of the UNESCO’s world heritage sites. Many art museums, science centre also draw tourists by virtue of their extensive collection of fine art. Rosenkrantz Tower from the 16th century built as a fortified tower and later restored is a magnificent construction. A visit to Bergen is not complete without a trip to the famous fish market along the harbor offering wide variety of fish including the Salmon. There are many colorful parks and lakes viz., Lille Lungegardsvann, Byparken where visitors can find sea gulls and beautiful flowers. The ubiquitous parks are filled with famous benches especially ‘the blue stone’ which is the popular vintage point in Bergen.

The Bergen aquarium, the largest public aquarium of Norway, houses extensive collection of invertebrates, fishes, penguins and seals attracting visitors of all ages.

Getting Around:
Bergen is well connected by air and rail. Ferries, boats are the preferred way to explore the nature while buses and hired cars are also available, a good guide is to know where you are going then choose the best mode of transportation

The landscape is conducive to hiking, biking and skiing, sledging are very famous during the snowy winters. One can enjoy fishing in the many lakes and the unique experience of fishing on the coast. Visitors can reap the benefit of ‘midnight sun’ in summers and go cruising or kayaking while scuba diving, river rafting are other commonly seen activities. Galleriet houses varied shops and restaurants. Souvenir shops at Bryggen offer native sweaters, trolls and tins. Night clubs, bars in the midnight sun of summers is unique and unforgettable.
