Experiencing Culture in the Sudanese City of Omdurman

The city of Omdurman is a part of Khartoum State in Sudan. It lies on the banks of River Nile opposite to the capital of Sudan, Khartoum. The densely populated city (as per African standards) is a major commercial hub of the country. The culturally vibrant city has many industries directly or indirectly controlled by the Sudanese government.

Accommodation Options
Guesthouses and government rest houses are popular in Omdurman and most parts of Sudan. Omdurman offers better luxury than other smaller towns. Budget hotels are popular with visitors. As the city is known for its educational facilities, some private youth hostels attract visitors from neighbouring areas.

History
Muhammad Ahmad (a Mahdi leader, also known as the Mahdi) made Omdurban his military headquarters in 1884. Unfortunately, this particular movement resulted in the Mahdist War. Later his successor, Khalifa Abdullahi ibn Muhammad, made Omdurman his capital again in 1885. The place grew rapidly as a trade centre but the battle of Omdurman in 1898 ensured British control over Sudan and the capital status shifted to Khartoum.

Climate
The whole of Sudan experiences hot climate, which makes winters the best time to visit any part of Sudan. Rainfall is sparse in Omdurman.

Popular Places
There are many recreational activities including some outdoor activities, which can de done in Omdurman. National Theatre and Al-Arays Theatre (famous for puppets) serve art and are popular with artistically inclined people in Omdurman. Alwataniya Cinema, the Higher Institute for Music & Theatre along with Qasr Alshabab O Alatfal are often visited by young and old folks alike. Tomb of Sheikh Hamad El Nil Tomb (Muslim propagator) attracts a lot of visitors. Souq Omdurman, Souq Libya and Souq Aljilod are famous tourist markets.

Getting Around
There are many bus lines and routes which operate throughout the state. Main routes to Omdurman come through Alshohada, Alfitihab and Atthoura. There are many options for people coming to Omdurman from Khartoum. Minivans and 4 wheeler micro-vans called Amjaads are popular and convenient modes of transport. Auto rickshaws are called rakshas here, which are known for being fun rides but are not recommended for long travels. Local guides are available and help through the customs and traditions of the Islamic country.

Places of Entertainment
Omdurman is a symbol of national unity and diversity making it the second most important city after Sudan’s capital Khartoum. Alwataniya Cinema is popular with locals for entertainment. Every Friday (Jhumma, the holy day) local people and visitors gather to witness the ‘Whirling Dervishes’ which is a holy dance to the beat of drums. Local Sufi Muslim men wear colourful robes and dance during the practice. For locals, swimming along the river Nile is both a holy and a recreational activity. Almourada Family Park and Rivera Recreational Park are famous parks along the shores of River Nile known for outdoor dining and other fun activities for children.

Languages Used
Arabic is widely spoken here. Other languages include Swahili, Folano, Nubian, and Zandi. English is used in commercial places and tourist hubs mostly.
