City Phonsavan – The Gateway to the Plain of Jars
Phonsavan is one of the cities of Laos and is popular as the new capital of the Xieng Khouang Province of the country. The city is popular as the gateway of the famous Plain of Jars. Lacking the urban charm, Phonsavan is not a traveller’s paradise, but can be visited to experience some natural beauty and view the stamps of the recent war.

History
Phonsavan is only few years old, as it was built in the 1970s. It was after the destruction of Xieng Khouang Province’s previous capital in a war that led to the creation of the city as the new capital. The war was fought between the communist leader Pathet Lao and the anti-communist group supported by America. Being a relatively newer town as compared to the other towns in the country, Phonsavan is on its way to progress.
Popular Places
Unfortunately, there are not many tourist attractions accommodated by Phonsavan. However, one can visit the nearby Plain of Jars, the famous attractions of the country. One can actually find big-sized stone jars on this part of the region.
Lao War Memorial, located on a hilltop, is another place to visit. One can enjoy the stunning views of the town from the hilltop. You can also find hot water springs in the nearby areas. Buddhist temples are located near the town and can be visited by the tourists.
