San Marino City- Compact City on the Mountain

The amazing mountain top views draw visitors to this compact capital city, San Marino.

History:
San Marino City is named after its founder Saint Marinus. The city is synonymous with the country as it is the only major city in the small country of San Marino. Historically, it was ruled independently and remained neutral in both the world wars.

Popular Places:
Monte Titano, one of the UNESCO world heritage sites, is the major attraction offering astonishing views of the city as well the nearby Adriatic Sea. Its three peaks house the famous towers which were built as fortress. The first tower- Guaita is the largest and oldest built in the 11th century. The exhibits on this tower give an insight into the past of San Marino.  The second tower – Cesta on the highest point not only offers amazing views but also retraces visitors to medieval times. The third tower- Montale dates back to the 14th century and tourists are not allowed here. Piazza della Liberta, the bustling liberty square, boasts of the statue of liberty which is an amazing piece of work by Stefano Galletti. 

Palazzo Pubblic – the government building is another major attraction in the liberty square. Cappella di Santa Barbara near the first tower is a magnificent chapel from the 13th century and also the Fiori di Roccia meaning the flowers of the rocks is an attractive sculpture. Basilica del Santo and Chisetta di San Pietro – the religious places are masterpieces of art. The entrance to the city, Porta di San Francesco, was built in the 14th century.  The bell tower on the Palazzo del Governo houses the statues of St. Marino, St. Agata and St. Leo.

Getting Around:
The nearest international airport is in the city of Rimini, Italy and heliport in Borgo Magorrie is another mode to reach the country. Buses ply between Rimini and San Marino regularly while taxis and aerial tramway aid in getting around, a guide to make the most of the city ithout getting lost is to get a map

Places of Entertainment:
Stroll on Monte Titano across the walls offers some spectacular views and one comes across many vantage points. San Marino City is shoppers’ haven as it offers various souvenirs and other regular items all without tax.

San Marino City is mostly visited by day trippers; however, there are many budget hotels, bed and breakfast, motels, youth hostels, guesthouse and private apartments for an extended stay.
