Sarajevo – Charming City in the Valley

Religious diversity coupled with beautiful valley, hills and vibrant markets makes trip to Sarajevo, capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a memorable one.

History:
In existence from the Neolithic era, the city of Sarajevo progressed during the Ottoman Era. It also hosted winter Olympics in 1984, which spurred tourism in the place. The most remarkable event in the history of Sarajevo is its siege during the Bosnian war as a result of which it suffered tremendous devastation and civilian casualty.

Popular Places:
Sarajevo is also referred as ‘the Jerusalem of Europe’ by virtue of its rich history in religious diversity. Gazi Husrev-bey's mosque from the 16th century is one the significant Islamic monuments in the country. Among the many historical mosques, Alipasina Mosque is an architectural excellence. This 16th century Turkish style mosque was restored recently and draws many visitors. Beg mosque and its courtyard is a lovely place in white stone. National Museum gives an insight into the historical and cultural past of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The main street, Bascarsija, is a lively place with many shops, restaurants and many old buildings depict the ancient Bosnian architecture. The war-hit tunnel and its museum are a must visit to get an insight into the struggle and the spirit of Bosnians. At the end of Bascarsija, there is Vjecna Vatra where an eternal flame is dedicated to the victims of World War II. Many bridges along the river Miljacka offer a beautiful sight of river. The Bosniak Martyrs Cemetery and Memorial leaves a somber feeling at the sight of numerous graves of war martyrs.

Getting Around:
Sarajevo has an airport serving many local and foreign carriers. It is also well connected by rail and buses from many European countries and from many cities in the country. Getting around is facilitated by trams and buses, a good guide to have smooth travel on the buses and trams is to have some small change and coins handy to pay for your journey.

Places of Entertainment:
National theatre hosts plays, ballets, opera and concerts. Many film festivals and jazz concerts are held every year. Visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina is not complete without tasting the native grilled item, Ćevapi. Many shops in Bascarsija offer numerous Turkish crafts and many silver, copper and brass items. Entire city sparkles in the illuminations and the lively pubs, clubs add to the glitter.

Accommodation:
Inns, cottages, budget hotels, bed & breakfast, motels, guesthouse, youth hostels and lodgings provide multiple accommodation options. Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian are the languages spoken here.
