City Sekondi Takoradi – The Industrial Hub of Ghana
The fourth largest city and the industrial hub of Ghana, Sekondi Takoradi is famous for its plywood, timber, ship building, rail road repair and cigarette industries. Also known as ‘Twin City’; it is a prominent education centre too. The city holds both cultural as well as historical importance as it has been a major destination for import-export since its inception.

History
Sekondi became a chief trading centre of Ghana on account of the rail road made here in 1903. It also emerged as a major seaport in 1928. The city was ruled by the Dutch, Swedish and British dynasties respectively. Takoradi acted as an important air-base during the World War II. In 1946, both Sekondi and Takoradi were combined to form a territory and later became a single city in 1963.

The 17th century Fort Orange, which is one of the largest forts in Ghana, was built by Dutch rulers as a lighthouse for defence purposes.
