City Serekunda – Casino City of Gambia

The largest city of Gambia, Serekunda lies in the south west direction of the capital city Banjul. One of the most densely populated cities in Gambia; Serekunda is renowned worldwide for its bustling casinos, markets and wrestling matches. It is quite near to the resort towns located on the Atlantic seashore like Kotu, Bakau and Fajara. A prominent transport hub of the country, the Serekunda city is also famous for its cotton silk plants.

History
In the 10th century, Serekunda earned fame as one of the important cities of the trans-Saharan trade circuit developed by Arabic traders. It remained the centre of Mali Empire till the end of 15th century. Portugal invaded the Gambia region including the city in 16th century. The series of invasions followed by Courland’s Jakub Kettler and the British Empire (in 1889). Serekunda got independence in 1965 with the independence of Gambia.

Serekunda Market, Kachikaly Crocodile Pool, Botanical Garden and Bijilo Nature Reserve are the major tourist spots visited by the travellers here. Other places of tourist interest are the Kololi and Cape Point beaches that lie close by the city. The nearby suburbs popular in the tourist circuit are Latrikunda, Sukuta, Kanifing and London Corner.

The town is well connected with other major Gambian cities through regular and frequent flights available from Banjul International Airport. Buses, cruises, boats, bikes, bicycle and car rentals are the most popular modes of transport in the city. Serekunda is home to the cheapest bars and royal casinos found in Gambia. Serekunda market is bordered by several bars and restaurants and economic souvenir shops. This vibrant African market is quite traditional with tourists thronging in large numbers. Biggest events in this city are the wresting matches organised as social mores, by the local residents, in which anyone and everyone can participate openly.
