History
Originally founded as the military camp during the reign of Shehu Usmanu, it became the capital of the city after his death. In 1903, the British conquered the caliphate and it was made an autonomous body under the government of Northern Nigeria. Sokoto became the headquarters of the north-western state created in 1967.
