Sumgait – Enjoy the Pleasant and Peaceful Seaside
Sumgait, also referred to as Sumqayit, is the third largest city in Azerbaijan. Located near the Caspian Sea, on the northern coast of Apsheron Peninsula and on the bank of the River Sumgait, the city is at a distance of 30 km from national capital, Baku. Known mainly for the presence of huge industries, the city also offers exotic seaside treasure for the tourists.
History:
Sumgait doesn’t share a long history, as the city was discovered in the early 20th century only. However, some signs of settlements belonging to the 16th century have been discovered. It was in 1920s that the city came under the control of Soviet rule and the development of industries began. Construction of thermal power plant, petroleum industries, metallurgical and chemical plants was done in the mid of 20th century. In 1949, Sumgait acquired the status of being a city.
Popular Places:
River Sumgait is one of the attractions of the city. The river, and hence the city, borrowed its name from a romantic legend, known to the local residents. Sum, a brave man, had to fight with a monster, which blocked the path of the river. However, after defeating the monster, Sum got disappeared in the heavy flow of the river. After his disappearance, his lover Jeyran would visit the site and cry ‘Sum Gayid’ that means ‘Sum return’. This led to the name of the river as well as the city.
Costal area of the city offers great views and a peaceful environment for the tourists to relax. Novkhana is a salt water lake near the city of Sumgait. Adsyz Cape is one of the most splendid beaches in the area. Sarai is a small village near the city and can be visited to view an old mosque. Shakhov Bank is a small natural reserve, located to the east of the city.
Getting Around:
Buses and minibuses are the modes to get around the city, one thing to remember to help guide you round the city is to keep some small notes and coins handy to pay for your travel. One can also explore the coastal area on foot.
Places of Entertainment:
An UEFA accredited football stadium is located in the city that can be used for exercising or playing the game. You can find some good restaurants in the coastal areas, as well as in other parts of the city.
